The price of Alexandrite can vary from significantly from $10,000 per carat to over $50,000 per carat depending on my factors. For example, 1 Carat Size Alexandrites significantly differ in price depending on origin, clarity, and degree of color change from $3,000 per carat up to $20,000 per carat. This is because Alexandrite is considered one of the rarest gemstones in the world!

As a general rule, Alexandrite can be categorized into three different price categories:

1. Low Grade (quality)

Lower quality Alexandrite typically fall on the border between chrysoberyl (no color change), and a weak color shift. These stones may not get lab certification for alexandrite. These Alexandrites are budget friendly and will typically cost below $2000 per carat.

Pay attention to online sellers who dramatically price these alexandrites. Do not be fooled by exuberant prices alone. People assume that every Alexandrite is expensive when the reality is the next two price categories are the ones you should purchase.

2. Medium Grade (quality alexandrites).

Medium Quality Alexandrites will definitely meet the threshold by labs to qualify as Alexandrite. The color change will likely be above 50-60%. The Green color might lighter, and sometimes the modifier will have some brown. It is important to note that the presence of “brown” does not necessarily mean it is a low-grade alexandrite. However, if the color change is brown alone, this would likely fall into the lower grade category.

Alexandrites that fall into this middle range are extremely hard to find due to their high demand. The price point is more consumer friendly. Wholesale price for this category will be from $7,000 to $20,000 per carat.

Origin for these Alexandrites has some level of importance. For example, a Brazilian Alexandrite with the same exact features of a Tanzanian Alexandrite will always be more expensive. The same applies for Russian Alexandrites. Beyond Russia and Brazil, origin will not dramatically change the pricing of medium quality alexandrites.

Pay attention to daylight color. You should try to buy Alexandrites that have Green to Blue-Green color. A little yellow is acceptable as well.

Clarity is not as important as color change for medium quality alexandrites. As clarity improves, one can expect price to go up and the gem to move into the next category below.

3. Top Quality (high quality alexandrites)

Top Quality Alexandrites includes gem quality, and Alexandrites with superior color change (80 to 100%). The origin can have multiplying factor in price. With Brazil and Russian Origins, you can expect a significant premium price of 2x market rate. Wholesale prices for 1 carat Alexandrite can be $20,000 per carat or more.
